Jesus already knew all about what would happen, as prophets recorded in the Bible. He knew that he would feel lonely because it was written in the Bible, “I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered” (Zech. 13:7).
He had his last meal prepared just before his death. During the meal, he said with a piece of bread, “This is my flesh. You must eat my flesh as you eat this bread.” And he gave a cup of wine to his disciples, saying, “You must drink my blood as you drink this wine.” He emphasized again that there would be no eternal life without his flesh and blood. Because Jesus knew that his disciples would not understand these spiritual words, he explained with a metaphor of bread and wine (Matt. 26:26-28).
