Chapter 15

Jesus already knew all about what would happen, as prophets recorded in the Bible. He knew that he would feel lonely because it was written in the Bible, “I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered” (Zech. 13:7).

He had his last meal prepared just before his death. During the meal, he said with a piece of bread, “This is my flesh. You must eat my flesh as you eat this bread.” And he gave a cup of wine to his disciples, saying, “You must drink my blood as you drink this wine.” He emphasized again that there would be no eternal life without his flesh and blood. Because Jesus knew that his disciples would not understand these spiritual words, he explained with a metaphor of bread and wine (Matt. 26:26-28).

After he taught his disciples, he went along with his disciples to a place where he used to go when he felt lonely. At that time, Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, went out to betray him and eleven disciples followed him.

Jesus went out to the Mount of Olives and left his disciples at Gethsemane, because he did not want to show them he was scared of death. He went up a few more steps to

the hill and got down on his knees. At that moment, he was very mournful. Because his disciples, who had followed him for three years, were still suspicious about Jesus’ identity, he was worried about their lack of faith in him. Therefore, he felt lonely, when he prayed to God on the rock on his knees. Then he felt his mind getting weak, even though he already knew about his death for thirty-three years.

He wanted to avoid his death, but he prayed. “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me” (Matt. 26:39). God saw Jesus weakened from the sky, so he urgently sent an angel to encourage him. The angel from heaven appeared to Jesus and strengthened him (Luke 22:43). He prayed again and stopped to look down at Jerusalem.

Today we have electric power so the night view is quite bright, but there was only the torch on the gate of Jerusalem in the dark when he saw it. After he looked down upon Jerusalem, remembering that he would be crucified there, he came down to his disciples. He was sad to see his disciples falling asleep.

He returned to the place where he prayed before. He prayed
