and James (Matt 17:1). These three disciples saw a same vision: Before the eyes of the three disciples, there appeared Moses and Elijah, standing with Jesus and talking with him. Then a light coming down from the sky to Jesus and a voice said that, “This is my son, whom I love, and I am well pleased with him.” When the three apostles awoke they saw no one except Jesus (Matt 17:8).
After this experience, the disciples finally believed Jesus to be the Son of God and then asked him, “Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?” (Matt 17:10) Israelites knew that Elijah would come before Messiah (Mal. 4:5). Jesus replied, “Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished” (Matt 17:12), meaning that people did not recognize him and then killed him. Then the disciples understood that John the Baptist was Elijah (Matt 17:13).
On another occasion Peter said to Jesus, “We have left everything to follow you. What then will there be for us?” (Matt 19:27). Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve
