eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me” (John 5:39).

When Jesus spoke about the requirements for eternal life while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum, he deliberately said something they wouldn’t understand. He said the necessities for eternal life are “You should eat my flesh and drink my blood.”

Later, when his disciples became frustrated, Jesus said to them. “The Spirit gives life, the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life” (John 6:63). His words were supplemented by Paul later: “So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable” (1Cor. 15:42).

Because Jesus emphasized he would raise them on the last day several times, they had another question about it. So they asked Jesus about the last day. Jesus answered, “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father” (Matt. 24:36).

Jesus said eternal life would be given on the last day. So even

if people ate his flesh and drank his blood, it does not guarantee them eternal life now. That’s not to be given until the last day has come.

Nobody knows about that in Christianity so far. So people who believe in Jesus, no matter who they are, great pastors and beggars alike, they pray to God when they are about to die, “We shall meet on that beautiful shore.” They believe eternal life will be given to them soon after their death.

Why do they believe like that? Because Jesus said, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). They trust that Christians who believe in Jesus are guaranteed to have eternal life soon after death. Wherever you go, all Christians believe this to be true.

So if I try to reveal that it’s not true, it’s not easy to say that. It’s tremendously difficult. Who would want to believe my words? That’s why I explain it with reference to the Bible. How can I deal with the opponents without Jesus’ words? People may mock me, but they would not laugh at Jesus’ words.
